How to judge a literature festival? By looking at the list of celebrities participating? or is it about the kind of sessions that take place?
Well, there are more celebrities here than you’ll find anywhere else and the sessions look impressive enough. But, to answer the above question truly, one has to first and foremost experience the event itself. It’s about the words floating in the air, ideas spreading like wildfire, and the fire-and-fury itself over the beliefs and ideologies. Jaipur Literature Festival offeres one, all the food for thought that there is.
A matter of style
JLF is known for many things. One of those prominent strands is, ‘How people carry themselves around’. If JLF is Mecca for the literary enthusiasts, then surely it’s the ‘Paris Fashion Week’ for some others. People from all over the world sport their personal statements through their attire and attitude, and proudly, and rightfully so, show it around. So it’s safe to say that JLF is not just a world of beautiful books.
The Literary Quotient
From discussing various aspects of the extraordinary life of Mahatma Gandhi to the tales of overcoming the taboos associated with LGBT community, the second day at JLF opened with a sense of breaking the ice about the sensitive topics in society and discovering new perspectives in the process. ‘Listening to the other side’ felt like the overarching theme. Literature can bring people together under one roof but it’s the exchange of ideas that develops the required understanding that keeps them together.
JLF is many things to many people. Therefore, to put a final word on its head or give it a line definition would be missing out on the very idea of it. The second day brought home the point regarding the inclusivity and the sense of otherness that prevents people from communicating with each other.
It’s a great exercise in turning the young people into the thought leaders of tomorrow and establishing a communication line in general. Day 3 looks exciting with amazing sessions lined up. See you on the other side!
